St John the Evangelist, Preston, Brighton

St John’s Brighton awarded £2,000 Mission Fund grant

The funding will help further develop the church’s community garden — a space where local residents and church members can come together, enjoy nature through gardening sessions and form friendships.

Jane Millett, one of the church’s three volunteer Environment Officers, said: “We are delighted to receive this grant. It will help us grow our community garden and provide regular opportunities for people to meet, appreciate nature together, and form new friendships.’

The funds will help the cost of replacing some tools and go towards activities to grow mission, including through outdoor worship. Canon Emma,  said: ‘This grant will help us to build partnerships with other local groups. Last year, after a blessing of the garden service, a local nursery started to use the space regularly and have returned this Spring. We had our first outdoor Carol service, which included a fun short play: The light of  the World- A Winter Solstice Celebration, and singing around the fire pit with hot chocolate and mulled wine. We want to encourage more people and groups using the space and the church. Already this year we have welcomed Stefania from GoodGym who will bring a group of happy volunteers to a gardening session after Easter."

As well as holding regular fortnightly gardening session on Saturdays, St John's will extend this after Easter to a Thursday fortnightly session, giving even more opportunity for people to feel part of the wonderful welcoming community.

There are tasks of all sizes for all abilities! we look forward to welcoming you. If you want to chat to a volunteer please email the church office:  office@brightonstjohn.co.uk

St John is also part of the Community Garden Network Trail in June (part of Brighton and Hove Green Spaces Forum) Watch this space for details.
